Suggestions for Experiment D

Here are procedures for carrying out Experiment D

  1. Give directions for students to set up the Force Machine with hangers at 4" from the fixed pivot (the 6" mark) and at 8" from the fixed pivot (the 8" mark).

  2. Review the data sheet with the class, then ask everyone to place 4 clips on the hanger at 4” from the fixed pivot.

  3. Students make a pencil mark on the end of the lever arm, then line up a marker on the vertical strip with this pencil mark.

  4. Remove the 4 clips. Add clips to the hanger at 8” from the fixed pivot until the pencil mark on the lever is even (or nearly so) with the marker on the vertical link.

  5. Students should find that 2 clips are needed. Do troubleshooting with those who get different results.

  6. Students record the results in the data table, then complete the trials of this experiment.
